Coventry is believed to have originated as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, though its exact origins are uncertain. There are different theories about the origin of its name, but the most widely accepted one suggests that it was derived from “Cofa’s tree,” a tree that may have marked the centre or boundary of the settlement and was named after a Saxon landowner called Cofa. The Romans established a large fort on the outskirts of the city in Baginton, next to the River Sowe, which was constructed around AD 60 during the Boudican revolt and inhabited until around 280 AD. This fort has been excavated and partially reconstructed in modern times and is now known as the Lunt Fort.
